Mama Says Om: Scary

It is scary to be young, to find out you are going to have a child of your own. I think that is why we are given 9 months to process it, because sometimes it takes that long to be ready for the birth, and becoming a mother.

It is scary when you finally have your baby and the nurses take her away. You assume it is only to clean her up, and so you can eat. But time goes by, one hour, two hours, three hours, four. You finally send someone to find out what is going on. As she comes back into your hospital room, you KNOW something is wrong by the look on her face. Your mother tells you that “she will be ok, it is only a little problem.”

Your heart drops into your stomach, you feel like you will puke.

Your newly born baby has a cleft palate.

It is scary to think of all of the other things that could have been wrong. It is frightening to ponder what it would have been like if I had had zero support like so many other new mothers.

I was lucky, SHE was lucky. She didn’t have any other problems, but still, I will NEVER forget the feeling I had, the moment they told me that she had a birth defect. It was panic, it was awful. It was SCARY.
